Year-long festival of families in KL Archdiocese starts

AUG 20, 2022: Rome saw the biggest gathering of Catholic families from all over the world last June 22-26. This is the 10th World Meeting of Families held every three years and in different cities.

The Archdiocese of Kuala Lumpur is taking the Vatican-initiative further by holding a year-long celebration filled with family-centred events and activities.

To mark the start of this “festival of families”, KL Archbishop Most Rev Bishop Julian Leow will be leading the Eucharistic celebration in the inaugural Mass at the Cathedral of St John the Evangelist in Kuala Lumpur on Aug 21, which is this Sunday.

Bishop Julian says that there will be religious and community-based activities that promote family love, from now to July next year. In a video on the “festival of families”, Archbishop Julian said that the archdiocese would reach out to unfortunate families, including those whose marriages are broken. The year-long activities and events will be done through the Family Life Commission. Rev Fr Peter Anthoney is the ecclesiastical assistant of the commission.

The activities for the year include revisiting Amoris Laetitia with an in depth understanding of it, having family-related podcasts, family worship of the Blessed Sacrament, family rosaries and pilgrimages. There will also be outreach to the poor, single parents, the disabled, and migrants.
